President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the United States has initiated fresh overtures to renegotiate the contentious $109 million health financing compact earlier repudiated by Ghana’s Cabinet.

The proposed compact had been tabled as a successor arrangement to health sector support previously channeled through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Ghana, however, unequivocally rejected the agreement following a comprehensive review, with Government raising profound reservations that certain conditionalities enshrined in the deal were demeaning and constituted an affront to the nation’s sovereign integrity.

Addressing a citizens’ engagement forum in Goaso in the Ahafo Region, President Mahama disclosed that Washington has now sought to revisit the agreement with a view to expunging or substantially amending the objectionable clauses, thereby creating an avenue for renewed dialogue.

“I have already spoken about the health funding deal sought by the U.S. The latest is that they have reached out to review the deal, and there is room for further discussions,” he said.

The President underscored that Ghana remains resolute and unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding its sovereign prerogatives as deliberations on the proposed health funding agreement progress.
