THE EAST IS THE NEW FORWARD…

As Ghana’s new president and government take the reins of leadership, the nation stands at a pivotal moment in its history. The choices made today will shape the trajectory of Ghana’s development for decades to come. In a world increasingly defined by geopolitical realignments and shifting global power dynamics, Ghana has a unique opportunity to strengthen its ties with the eastern bloc of the world—particularly with nations like China and Russia—whose cooperation and aid arrangements have proven transformative for other African nations. The recent successes of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in forging mutually beneficial partnerships with these eastern powers offer a compelling blueprint for Ghana to follow.

On 7th April 1960, the founder of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is credited to have said: “We face neither east nor west: we face forward”. This profound statement was made in the heat of the Cold War between the Western and Eastern blocs after the 2nd World War. For many on the international stage, the champion for African nationalism and one of the founders of the Non-Aligned Movement stated this position to emphasize the organisation’s neutrality in the ongoing “war”. But for Africans and Ghanaians in particular “facing forward” meant developing any meaningful partnership that would help spearhead the rapid transformation of the continent in general and Ghana in particular. It was around this moment in history that he started the Akosombo Hydroelectric Project and got assisted by the Kaiser Company of the United States and signed the aluminum smelter agreement, the same time, Nkrumah accepted assistance from the USSR, bought Soviet aircraft for Ghana Airways and sent doctors for training in Soviet nations. He also worked with Communist China, whobsent hundreds of experts to help build Ghana’s new economy. 68 years down the line, and after a long period of underdevelopment and neocolonialism, Ghana and the continent must reconsider the direction to face in our quest for rapid and sustainable development.

The western bloc, led by the CIA orchestrated the coup that overthrew Kwame Nkrumah in 1966, Ghana’s visionary first president, who had embarked on a bold, pro-socialist development trajectory aimed at liberating Ghana and Africa from neo-colonial exploitation. Nkrumah’s vision of a united, self-reliant Africa was cut short, and subsequent governments, under pressure from Western institutions like the IMF and World Bank, were forced to implement Structural Adjustment Programs (SAPs). These programs led to the privatization of over 400 state-owned companies and enterprises, dismantling the very foundations of Ghana’s economic sovereignty.

The story of Ghana is not unique. Across Africa, Western powers have undermined progressive leaders and destabilized nations to maintain their dominance. Patrice Lumumba of the Democratic Republic of Congo was assassinated in 1961 with Western complicity, Thomas Sankara of Burkina Faso was overthrown and killed in 1987, and Muammar Gaddafi of Libya was toppled in 2011, leading to the collapse of one of Africa’s most prosperous nations. These coups and interventions were not isolated events but part of a broader pattern of Western interference designed to keep Africa dependent and underdeveloped. Even today, Western sanctions continue to cripple African economies, stifling growth and perpetuating poverty.

In this context, the eastern bloc, led by China and Russia, has emerged as a reliable partner for developing nations seeking to accelerate their economic growth and infrastructure development. Unlike traditional Western aid models, which often come with stringent conditions, limited flexibility and even sanctions, the eastern approach emphasizes mutual respect, non-interference in domestic affairs, and a focus on long-term partnerships. This model has resonated deeply with African nations, as evidenced by the growing ties between the Alliance of Sahel States (comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger) and eastern powers.

China, for instance, has become Africa’s largest trading partner and a key investor in infrastructure projects across the continent. Through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China has funded and constructed roads, railways, ports, and energy projects that have unlocked new economic opportunities for partner nations. Similarly, Russia has expanded its footprint in Africa through strategic partnerships in energy, defense, and agriculture, offering African nations access to critical resources and expertise. Mahama’s former government worked well with the Chinese government to complete important infrastructure projects like the Bui Hydroelectric Dam.

The Alliance of Sahel States has leveraged these partnerships to address pressing challenges such as infrastructure deficits, energy shortages, and security threats. By aligning with the eastern bloc, these nations have secured not only financial and technical support but also a stronger voice on the global stage. Ghana, with its stable political environment, strategic location, and abundant resources, is well-positioned to reap similar or even more benefits.

The new government of Ghana with the overwhelming endorsement at the 2024 polls have the opportunity to reset the country and rapidly transform the country by looking to the east for some of the following reasons :

1. Infrastructure Development: Ghana’s infrastructure gap remains a significant barrier to economic growth. Eastern partners, particularly China, have a proven track record of delivering large-scale infrastructure projects efficiently. By partnering with eastern nations, Ghana can accelerate the construction of roads, railways, and energy facilities, creating jobs and boosting economic activity.

2. Technology and Innovation: China and Russia are global leaders in technology and innovation. Ghana can tap into their expertise to modernize its agricultural sector, improve our digital infrastructure, and develop a knowledge-based economy. This would not only enhance productivity but also position Ghana as a regional hub for innovation.

3. Security Cooperation: The threat of terrorism and instability in the Sahel region poses a risk to Ghana’s security. Russia, with its experience in counterterrorism and defense, can provide valuable support to strengthen Ghana’s security apparatus. Enhanced cooperation in this area would safeguard Ghana’s sovereignty and ensure a stable environment for development.

4. Economic Diversification: Overreliance on traditional exports like cocoa and gold has made Ghana vulnerable to global market fluctuations. Eastern partnerships can help Ghana diversify its economy by investing in sectors such as manufacturing, renewable energy, and mining. This would create new revenue streams and reduce economic vulnerability.

5. Non-Interference and Mutual Respect: The eastern bloc’s commitment to non-interference in domestic affairs aligns with Ghana’s desire for sovereignty and self-determination. Unlike some Western partners, eastern nations do not impose political or economic conditions on their aid and cooperation. This approach fosters trust and ensures that partnerships are tailored to Ghana’s unique needs and priorities.

Ghana’s embrace of eastern partnerships is not just about national development; it is about reclaiming Africa’s destiny. By aligning with the eastern bloc, Ghana would once again assume the role championing pan-Africanism, inspiring and supporting neighboring countries to break free from the shackles of neo-colonialism and imperialism. A stronger Ghana can lead the charge in building a regional economy that prioritizes African interests and fosters intra-African trade and cooperation.

For example, Ghana can leverage its partnerships with China and Russia to develop cross-border infrastructure projects that connect West African nations, facilitating the free movement of goods, services, and people. This would lay the foundation for a truly integrated West African economy, reducing dependence on Western markets and creating a self-sustaining regional bloc.

Moreover, Ghana can use its influence to advocate for the lifting of Western sanctions that have stifled economic growth in countries like Zimbabwe, Congo (DRC), Guinea Bissau, Sudan and now South Africa. By standing in solidarity with its African brothers and sisters, Ghana can help build a continent that is united, prosperous, and free from external interference.

The Alliance of Sahel States provides a compelling case study for Ghana. By embracing eastern partnerships, these nations have secured billions of dollars in investments, strengthened their security capabilities, and enhanced their global standing. Ghana, with its stronger institutions and more diversified economy, is even better positioned to capitalize on these opportunities.

For example, Mali’s partnership with China has led to the construction of critical infrastructure, including the Bamako-Ségou Highway, which has boosted trade and connectivity. Similarly, Niger’s collaboration with Russia in the energy sector, the building of the Niger-Benin Oil Pipeline has unlocked new opportunities for economic growth. Ghana can replicate these successes by negotiating strategic agreements that prioritize its development goals.

As Ghana’s new president and government chart the course for the nation’s future, the time is ripe to embrace the opportunities offered by the eastern bloc. By forging stronger ties with China, Russia, and other eastern nations, Ghana can secure the resources, expertise, and partnerships needed to achieve its vision of a prosperous and self-reliant nation.

The eastern bloc’s model of cooperation—rooted in mutual respect, non-interference, and shared prosperity—offers a refreshing alternative to traditional aid frameworks. Ghana has the potential to become a beacon of sustainable development in Africa, but this will require bold leadership and a willingness to explore new avenues of partnership.

Let us seize this moment to build a brighter future for Ghana and Africa—one defined by innovation, resilience, and prosperity. The eastern bloc stands ready to support us on this journey. The question is: are we ready to take the first step? My response would be that “the new forward is the east”.
