Syrian Rebels Announce Leader Of Government After Assad’s Fall

Mohammed al-Bashir

By Abiola Olawale

Days after the government of President Bashar al-Assad was toppled in Syria, the country’s rebel forces have announced the leader of a transitional government.

The Syrian rebels now in power in Damascus appointed Mohammed al-Bashir as head of a transitional government.

The forces announced that al-Bashir will head the transitional government until March 1.

This was announced in a press statement issued on Tuesday.

It would be recalled that this comes after rebels led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) seized the capital of Syria, Damascus on Sunday, toppling President Bashar al-Assad, who fled the country.

Prior to his being tipped for the role, al-Bashir had been head of the rebels’ so-called Salvation Government in northwest Syria and previously held the role of its development minister.
