Our Brothers and Sisters, Market Women, Farmers, Students, Workers and Youth of Hohoe
We send our deepest revolutionary solidarity to the people of Hohoe who have been devastated by the floods.
In this hour of pain – when your homes are submerged, your farms washed away, your shops destroyed, we stand with you. Your suffering is our suffering.
This flood is not a natural accident – it is a social crime.
We in the scientific socialist tradition say clearly: Floods happen everywhere, but disaster is political.
Why does flood occur every year? Why are there no proper drainage systems, no planned affordable housing, no dredged rivers, no early warning systems?
It is because under this neo-colonial capitalist system, the state serves the profit of the few, not the needs of the many. Millions are spent on V8s, on servicing IMF loans, on tax exemptions for foreign mining companies, while the poor are left to live in flood-prone zones without infrastructure. The climate crisis caused by imperialist industrial pollution hits Ghana hardest, yet the bourgeoisie builds estates on waterways for profit.
The people of Hohoe are not victims – you are survivors of a failed system.
Our demands in solidarity:
- Immediate relief without bureaucracy – The Municipal Assembly and NADMO must provide emergency shelter, clean water, food, and medical care to all affected, without political, religious or racial discrimination.
- Compensation and Resettlement – The State must compensate farmers and traders for lost livelihoods and provide dignified, scientifically-planned resettlement, not temporary tents.
- People-Centred Infrastructure – We demand a comprehensive, publicly-funded drainage and flood-control project for Hohoe under public control and community supervision, not awarded to crony contractors.
- Community Power – We call on the youth, the market women associations, the GPRTU, the farmers’ groups in Hohoe to form Community Flood Action Committees to hold the Assembly accountable.
Comrades, do not let anyone tell you this is an act of God. This is the result of a system that puts profit over people. Only when the productive wealth of Ghana is socially owned and democratically planned to meet human need, can we end these man-made disasters.
We share your pain. We admire your resilience. And we pledge to struggle with you – for immediate relief today, and for a socialist Ghana tomorrow where no one sleeps in water because of poverty.
