CONVENTION PEOPLE’S PARTY PRESS STATEMENT – REMEMBERING
OSAGYEFO, DR KWAME NKRUMAH
Today the 27 of April 2021 marks the 49th Anniversary of the Death of Osagyefo Dr Kwame
Nkrumah the first President of the Republic of the Ghana who died in faraway Bucharest,
Romania from the country he so loved, cherished, sacrificed and died for. He was the doyen
of the African freedom struggle and through his efforts and that of his Comrades; Ghana his
beloved country became free forever.

Even in exile in Guinea, where he sought refuge after the obnoxious coup de tat in 1966,
(which was planned and perpetuated by forces from within and without), Osagyefo still was
in the liberation struggle where his home in Villa Syli became a haven and a place of refuge
for Comrades engaged in the Liberation Struggle all across the world.
He survived an assassination attempt, during an abortive invasion of Guinea by Portuguese
mercenaries but he survived this attempt on his life, but what eventually killed him were
wounds that were inflicted on him by a bomb blast at Kulungulungu, eventually Dr Osagyefo
wounds which turned cancerous became malignant and eventually killed him.

Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah died alone, but the fatality of his situation was more of the
‘Cancer of betrayal” (Amical Kabral) from people who were very close to him and also the
people of Ghana who he fought to liberate from the claws of colonialists and imperialists. His
death was without the pomp and pageantry; he was barred to even return to his country
Ghana because his enemies who have illegally taken over the reins of governance in Ghana
did not think it acceptable for him to return Osagyefo was an intellectual par excellence who did not hang his academic mettle on foreign suits and bow ties but did actualise it by authoring so many books notable among them:
Voice from Conakry, Dark days in Ghana, Class Struggle etc. and these pieces have won
international acclaim.

A visionary, one who turned Ghana into an industrial hub (Asutuare Sugar Factory, Wenchi Tomatoes factory, Kade Match Factory, Pwalungu Tomatoes Factory and so on which created employment for Ghanaians. He also built a lot of schools at all levels of our educational strata (Primary, Secondary and Tertiary) and provided good health care and an expansion of our social services (Free Education and Health Care) affordable housing for the citizenry, infrastructural development (Akosombo Dam, Tema Motorway etc.).
After forty-nine years after his death, Ghana has become a shadow of its self, darkness and gloom is our bane, once a net exporter of electricity under the CPP government led by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah is now reeling and struggling to keep our lights on.
Governments after the CPP, has not been able to keep the flame of development and liberation alive and our country is now reeling under illegal mining and its ramifications of degradation of our environment where our priced Cocoa is being affected so badly through foreign intrusion.
It is time for us as a nation to abandon the Duopoly (NDC and NPP) and focus on helping to bring the CPP to power to change the fortunes of this nation for a better Ghana.
We the current generation of Nkrumahists would rekindle the spirit of the Osagyefo to once again initiate the culture of self-determination to achieve the most sought after, economic independence
