PRESS STATEMENT ISSUE BY ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY COLLECTIVE OF
SOCIALIST MOVEMENT OF GHANA ON FOUNDER’S DAY
The decision of the Akufo-Addo government to remove Founder’s Day from the birthday of
Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah to August 4th is a shameful attempt to rewrite the history of
Ghana and to elevate the reactionary forces in Ghanaian politics to the level of national
heroes.
This attempt has failed as millions of people in Ghana and the diaspora still recognise
Nkrumah as the Founder of the modern Republic of Ghana and the main inspiration for
accelerated national liberation in Africa.
We demand the immediate re-instatement of September 21 as Founder’s Day to reflect the
true history of Ghana and the aspirations of the working people.
Osagyefo, Dr Kwame Nkrumah deserves to be celebrated and appreciated on September 21st
for his commitment to the nationalist struggle and his able leadership that ultimately led to
the independence of the Gold Coast from over a century of British colonial rule.
However, Islamic University Collective of Socialist Movement of Ghana do appreciate the
fact that Dr Kwame Nkrumah, was the one who fought for freedom and independence
leading to the independence of Ghana on March 6, 1957.
We therefore call on socialists and comrades all over the world to observe September 21st as
the only Founder’s Day
Viva socialism viva!
