NKG Textiles is a small‑scale textile firm based in Nkwanta South, Oti Region, Ghana. It’s known for producing batik and tie‑and‑dye fabrics through the National Apprenticeship Programme, where about 15 youths are trained and already making over 700 pieces of fabric for local markets. The CEO, Michael Nkpa, highlights how the program is creating direct and indirect jobs and stresses the need for support against cheap imports that threaten local industry
According to the CEO Ghanaians are finding it difficult to consume what they produce in the country. He stated that, there is a need for government to stop the in-flow of Chinese fabric into the country to help promote the made in Ghana goods.
Mr. Nkpa added that, the young ones who are outside there looking for jobs and work should venture into learning handy work, which will go a long way to help them take care of themselves and their families.
He also stated that, in his company, he is currently training a lot of youths and some of them are teachers, nurses and most are graduates.
Akorlie Mawunyo, a worker at NKG textiles stated in an interview that the youths should see the skills training as a great opportunity, they should not see it as a job for the block headed but rather jobs for creative people.
According to Akorlie Mawunyo the challenge they face in producing batik and tie-and-dye fabrics is that, Ghanaians are not purchasing made in Ghana goods. He highlight the difficulties they goes through trying to get the local markets attention.
The CEO of NKG, Michael Nkpa applaud the President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama for bringing the national apprenticeship program and Osman Ayeriga for given him the opportunity to train the youths who are willing to learn. He also call on the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Honorable Abla Dzifa Gomashie to know that there are very creative people in the Oti Region who need opportunity to showcase their talents for the world to see.
