  • Elder Explo Nani Kofi (Pro-Nkrumah Unity Movement, Ghana) reflects on the legacies of enslavement and colonialism on Afrika and her children.

He had began his presentation by reflecting on his own nation, the Gbetowo, who were forcibly divided across Ghana, Benin, Togo, Nigeria, and beyond due to colonial border-making. This division didn’t just separate families and communities—it led to the erosion of languages, traditions, and identities, forcing people to adapt by creating new, mixed languages. This pattern of fragmentation is a direct consequence of enslavement and colonialism, which sought to weaken indigenous Afrikan nations. The #BerlinConference /Scramble for Afrika was never just about land; it was about control—of people, culture, and sovereignty. Today, the wounds of this forced division remain, shaping everything from politics to language and identity.
