Mr. Abraham Koomson, Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), on Monday asserted that the recent pronouncement of former President John Agyekum Kufuor is stabbed in the back of Mr. Alan K. Kyeremanten, an independent presidential candidate of the Movement for Change.
“Former President Kufuor has stabbed Alan Cash in the heart through the back with his recent support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia against his anointed candidate,” Mr. Koomson stated in an interview in Tema on Monday.
He said former President Kufuor in 2007 propelled Mr. Alan Cash, who was a minister in his government, to stand for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race.
“Alan Cash suffered from President Kufuor’s support who had then lost favour with the rank and file of the NPP grassroots supporters. Alan Cash was tagged as Kufuor’s man to control the party.
“Through some strange machinations at the University of Ghana, where the party held its delegates congress to elect the flagbearer, Alan Cash was forced to concede defeat,” Mr. Koomson stated.
Mr. Koomson revealed that Alan Cash’s political somersaulting of an attempt to resign from the party after the 2007 Flagbearership fiasco and the capitalization on it later to hurt him was targeted at former President Kufuor.
“To be frank, Alan Kyeremanten, the Independent Presidential Candidate, and his supporters have suffered immensely as a result of close association with former President Kufuor, and for him to turn around and support another candidate against Alan is the unkindest cut of all,” Mr. Koomson stated.
“Despite all these, Alan Cash remained very loyal to Ex-President Kufuor up to date…it is very unfortunate and an act of betrayal of friendship, disregard for loyalty, ignoring years of dedicated and committed close association,” Mr Koomson stated.
Mr. Koomson stated, “As a statesman, former President Kufuor should have lived above partisan politics and remained a national figure without openly supporting any candidate.
“Former President Kufuor’s recent public statements show that he prioritizes party interest above national interest, which is dangerous for the deepening of Ghana’s democracy.”
The GFL Secretary General noted that as a former President and an astute politician, he should remain in the background to advise stakeholders and not be making statements with the tendency to divide the nation.
Mr. Koomson recounted that at the tail end of Ex-President Kufuor’s term, many Ghanaians criticized him after he was allegedly given the nation’s highest awards to himself and his close allies.
He recounted that critics of Ex-President Kufuor’s administration then wondered how a sitting president could create the highest award in the country and award it to himself.
“The Star of the Eagle of Ghana is the highest award of the land, but it was supposed to go to a Ghanaian president who has successfully ended his term of office. At the time President Kufuor received the award, he was still the President of Ghana,” Mr. Koomson recounted.
Mr. Koomson appeals to former President Kufuor to enjoy his retirement in peace and not disturb the suffering population with politically explosive statements.
“When pensioners went on a relentless demonstration against the government’s draconian haircut, we never heard Ex-President Kufuor issue any statement to support the old women and men who were being treated unjustly.
“Ghanaians are suffering through the bad policies of this government, and still Ex-President Kufuor is quiet, but suddenly he finds his voice to engage in active politics…this is unfortunate,” Mr. Koomson stated.
