KENYAN Member of Parliament George Koimburi has been charged with forging academic certificates, the Office of the Public Prosecutor confirmed on Wednesday. The lawmaker, who represents Juja constituency on the outskirts of Nairobi, faces six counts related to document forgery.

Forgery allegations and court proceedings

Koimburi was formally charged with three counts of forging academic certificates and an additional three for presenting false documents. The prosecution alleges that he falsified his high school certificate along with two university course participation certificates. Under Kenyan law, all parliamentary candidates must have completed high school education.

The MP denied all charges and was granted release on cash bail. His case adds to a growing list of Kenyan politicians accused of falsifying academic qualifications, though such prosecutions have rarely led to convictions.

Concerns over fake credentials in politics

Forgery of academic documents has been a persistent issue in Kenya’s political landscape. Several lawmakers have faced allegations of using fake certificates to meet legal and electoral requirements. However, successful legal action against such cases remains rare.

Koimburi’s trial is expected to test the government’s commitment to enforcing education qualification laws for public office holders. The case will proceed in court, where prosecutors aim to prove the allegations against him.
