United States Vice-President Kamala Harris and Democratic presidential hopeful’s bid in the coming American presidential elections has received an upward boost as latest opinion poll suggests that she has been able to overturn a deficit margin between Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump.
This is as the Vice President now has a 2 percentage point lead over Trump after President Joe Biden ended his re-election campaign and passed the torch to her.
According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, several Americans have accepted the candidacy of Harris.
The poll which was conducted on July 22 and 23, came after the July 18 Republican National Convention where Trump formally accepted his party’s nomination and the announcement by Biden on July 21 that he was leaving the race and endorsing Harris.
This is a sharp twist from the development a few weeks ago as Trump was in the lead at several opinion polls.
Biden’s chances had been dropping after a faltering debate performance against Trump at the end of June.
Concerns had also emerged that the 81-year-old president might be too old to serve another four years following a disastrous debate performance last month, and his uneven public appearances since.
The New Diplomat also reports that Harris has hit the ground running ever since accepting to contest the presidential election of the US.
She has received support from Democratic convention delegates and has been tipped to emerge as the party’s presidential candidate.
According to reports, the vice president has raised a record $81 million (£63 million) in direct donations in the 24 hours after Biden stepped down, with a further $150 million (£116 million) pledged via the Biden-aligned political action committee, Future Forward.
