Julius Malema just got sentenced over a 2018 rally incident. The state says it’s about public safety and the rule of law, but his supporters aren’t buying it. This case was pushed by the South African far-right group AfriForum, the same group pushing the “white genocide” myth with zero empirical evidence to back up their case, yet somehow they got the attention of Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Now one of South Africa’s loudest anti-imperialist political voices is facing up to 5 years jail time.

For supporters of Julius Malema and the Economic Freedom Fighters, this was never really about a rifle, but about him being one of the loudest critics of Western influence in South Africa and the country’s most vocal advocate for land expropriation without compensation from white farmers, whose land ownership traces back to the colonial period, particularly the 1913 Land Act that restricted Black South Africans, over 80% of the population, to roughly 7% of the country’s land, banning them from purchasing or leasing land outside designated “reserves” and cementing 87% of the land for white ownership.
Today, that legacy lives on, with white South Africans, who make up around 7% of the population, still owning over 70% of agricultural land and around three-quarters of privately owned farmland, while Black South Africans, who are the vast majority, own only around 15%. Groups like AfriForum, who detest Julius Malema, work day and night against any legislation trying to undo this historic injustice.
