Accra, 26 November 2025 — The Government of Ghana has issued a firm condemnation of the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, describing the action as an assault on democratic governance and a disruption of the country’s ongoing electoral process.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Ghana expressed “strong and unequivocal” disapproval of the coup carried out by elements of the Guinea-Bissau military. The intervention comes just days after the nation held peaceful presidential and legislative elections on 23 November 2025, with official results expected to be announced on 27 November.

According to the statement, the Government of Ghana views the sudden usurpation of civilian authority as a “brazen attempt to overturn the will of the people,” warning that the development poses a serious threat to the democratic trajectory of Guinea-Bissau.

Ghana has called for the immediate restoration of constitutional order, urging all political and military actors in Guinea-Bissau to respect the electoral process and channel any election-related grievances through legally recognised, transparent, and peaceful mechanisms.

The statement also emphasised the need to protect the rights and safety of all citizens and foreign nationals, with particular concern for officials of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission currently deployed in the country. Ghana demanded that the observers’ security and unhindered movement be guaranteed without delay.

Ghana further appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and refrain from actions that might heighten tensions during this critical period.

Reaffirming its support for regional and continental bodies, Ghana pledged full backing for ECOWAS and the African Union in coordinating a unified response to the crisis, in line with long-standing protocols on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.
