Organized Labour has announced a nationwide strike set to commence on October 10, 2024, in response to ongoing dissatisfaction with the government’s perceived inaction regarding the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
This destructive practice has severely impacted rivers, forest reserves, and farmlands across Ghana.
Representing various unions across the country, Organized Labour stated that the strike aims to pressure the government to address their demands, which include a ban on all forms of small-scale mining.
In a statement, the leadership of Organized Labour urged its members to remain at home on the designated days.
“Following the expiration of our deadline, and the failure of the government to meet our demands on illegal mining (galamsey). Organised Labour has decided to declare a nationwide strike with effect on October 10, 2024.
“We are, therefore, calling on all workers to stay at home starting Thursday, October 10, 2024, until the government accede to our demands,” part of the statement read.
