Article 21(I:d) of the 1992 #constitution is very clear. It states that “All persons shall have the right to #freedom of assembly including the freedom to take part in processions and #demonstration”. It is clear from this that the #constitutional #right to demonstrate is unfettered. However, the #Rawlings government got #Parliament to pass the #Public #Order #Law which placed so many fetters on the right to demonstrate including prior information to the #police and in cases of disagreement with the police, reference to the High #Court for a decision on whether a demonstration should be allowed or not Interestingly, all political parties in opposition including the National Democratic Congress (#NDC) have expressed discomfort with the Public Order Law at one time or the other. Perhaps it is time to take a serious look at the #PublicOrderLaw with a view to restoring the full unfettered right of the citizen to #demonstrate. Which #Parliamentarian will lead this effort?
