The head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State, Pope Francis, has been admitted to a hospital for treatment of bronchitis.
The Pope was hospitalised on Friday, marking another chapter in the ongoing health challenges faced by the 88-year-old cleric since his election in 2013.
In a press statement issued by the Vatican, it was confirmed that Pope Francis was taken to Rome’s Gemelli Polyclinic for “necessary diagnostic tests” and to continue treatment for his bronchitis.
Over the past few weeks, Pope Francis had been dealing with what was initially described as a “bad cold” but was later confirmed as bronchitis. During his weekly general audience on February 12, he admitted to still suffering from bronchitis and had an aide read his prepared remarks.
The New Diplomat reports that Pope Francis has a history of respiratory issues, having had part of one lung removed as a young man due to an infection.
In March 2023, Pope Francis was hospitalized for three days with a respiratory infection diagnosed as acute bronchitis and treated with intravenous antibiotics.
In 2021, he underwent surgery to remove part of his colon due to intestinal issues, which might have weakened his immune response, making him more susceptible to infections like bronchitis.
In June 2023, he had another surgical procedure to remove scar tissue and repair a hernia in his abdominal wall, adding to his list of health concerns.
