Students to march on Friday, 30th October against fee hikes and the commercialisation of student accommodation at the University of Ghana!

Accra: The #SaveTheUniversity Movement, Students for Accommodation and Concerned Students of Ghana, independent groups of undergraduate and graduate students across departments and hostels, will hold a march and rally on Friday, 30th October 2026, under the banner END STUDENT EXPLOITATION NOW!

The University of Ghana is a public institution built and sustained with public money, yet students are being treated as revenue streams. Continuing students are asked to pay at least GHC 5,000, and in some cases GHC 8,000, to qualify for a place in residence. Traditional halls have been converted into UGEL-run facilities that charge more, while the “In-Out-Out-Out” policy leaves continuing students without rooms. Where students do live in halls, water shortages, overcrowding, and poor sanitation persist. Graduate students are charged extended-stay fees to finish papers and research that the academic calendar itself requires.

In January 2026, the President was reported to have announced a 10,000-bed prefabricated hostel for the University, with factory equipment said to be on its way from Singapore. More than nine months later, students are asking where it is. They are also asking what plan exists to house students at the twelve new universities announced by the Minister of Education.

In our words: Accommodation is not a luxury! Education is not a business! Students are not revenue streams!

Our demands

1. An immediate freeze and reversal of all fee increases, especially residential fees.

2. An end to extended-stay charges for graduate students.

3. Full transparency: a published breakdown of all fees and who decided them.

4. A funded plan to improve residential, study and work conditions on campus.

5. Open forums by all JCRs with hostel residents to debate, vote and adopt a collective resolution on the accommodation fee increment.
