Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has voiced his worries about the poor transitioning of players from youth national teams to the senior national team, the Black Stars.
He stated that this gap significantly contributes to the decline in the team’s performance in recent years.
The 43-year-old emphasized that promoting players consistently from the youth ranks to the senior team is essential for fostering cohesion within the Black Stars.
Appiah shared his insights last month while addressing the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, which is probing the Save Ghana Football petition.
“We were playing on ‘sakora’ pitches. We were not using football shoes; you put on a bandage and you played. It didn’t stop us from achieving our goals.
“Today, they have everything—they have astroturfs, good pitches, yet they are failing. We have to find a way to help them.
“Today, the transition is not there anymore. Before, those who played under-17 would at least have 14 or 15 players in the next under-20 team. A new call-up.
“Next time, a different call-up. They will never gel; they will never understand each other. That’s football—they will never understand each other.”
