President Mahama launches One Million Coders Programme to bolster digital skills of Ghanaian

President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has launched the One Million Coders Programme in fulfillment of his campaign promise to Ghanaian ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Launched on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence Auditorium in Accra, the digital skills acquisition initiative aims to train one million Ghanaian youths and equip them with skills in coding, data analysis, cybersecurity among others.

In his keynote address at the launch, President Mahama said the initiative is not a mere fulfillment of a campaign promise but a pragmatic steps to achieving his government’s Reset Ghana agenda and making the country competitive in the digital economy.

“This is not just a fulfilled campaign promise. It is a deliberate move towards building a knowledge-based economy where our people are able to create solutions, find jobs, and complete globally,” President Mahama stated.

He further revealed that more than 90,000 people applied for the training within the first 48 hours after the programme was announced. He however added, that the first cohort of 560 trainees had already begun training in Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani and Bolgatanga.

To ensure inclusivity, Mr. Mahama noted that the programme will be accessible to everyone irrespective of their background including rural dwellers, persons with disabilities, and women.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Communications, Digital Innovation and Technology, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, underscored the importance of the One Million Coders Programme in boosting the country’s digital economy.

According to him, Ghana is in its defining moment in the digital economy, and that the initiative is a call to action to transform it, create jobs, and invest significantly in the citizens.

In attendance at the launch were stakeholders from the technology sector, government agencies, and development partners.
