Dear President John Dramani Mahama,
Congratulations on your re-election as the 6th President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.
Mr. President, with your wealth of experience, you are well aware that Ghana is neither a church nor a religious state. I would like to remind you that the persistent issues of corruption in Ghana are deeply rooted in the disregard for secular governance principles, where religious ideologies have subtly influenced state affairs.
While we all acknowledge your personal Christian faith, I urge you to ensure that it remains a private matter. Ghana deserves a secular state where governance is guided by reason, evidence, and the collective interest of all Ghanaians, rather than the imposition of personal religious beliefs. I refer to the National Cathedral project, which many of us viewed as an improper use of state resources. I hope you will avoid repeating this mistake and ensure that public funds and resources are not used for religious ventures.
Our founding fathers, including Kwame Nkrumah, and even the founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) J.J Rawlings, understood the importance of keeping religion separate from governance. Their successes were built upon a secular approach to governance and policy-making.
Additionally, your proposed National Day of Prayer bears a striking similarity to President Akufo-Addo’s Cathedral project and Vice President Bawumia’s Christian pilgrimage. I urge you to reconsider such initiatives to prevent repeating past errors.
