Tinubu begins historic UK visit as Nigeria and Britain pursue trade deals amid scrutiny and reparations debate

Keypoints:
- Tinubu begins first Nigerian UK state visit in 37 years
- Trade, defence and maritime deals headline talks
- Visit unfolds amid scrutiny and reparations debate
PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has arrived in the United Kingdom for a landmark state visit, marking the first such engagement by a Nigerian leader in nearly four decades and signalling a renewed push to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties.
Departing Abuja on March 17, Tinubu travelled to London with First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, senior ministers and top officials for a high-level programme focused on trade, investment and bilateral cooperation.
Historic visit after decades
According to statements from Nigeria’s presidency and Buckingham Palace, King Charles III and Queen Camilla will host the Nigerian leader at Windsor Castle from March 18 to 19. The visit is the first of its kind since 1989, when former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida travelled to the UK.
The development reflects a broader effort by both nations to revitalise relations rooted in history but increasingly shaped by economic pragmatism.
Economic diplomacy takes centre stage
Tinubu is expected to hold bilateral talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with agreements anticipated across trade, investment, defence and cultural cooperation, according to his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
A key outcome of the visit will be the signing of a £746m financing deal to refurbish two major maritime facilities in Lagos, a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s logistics and port infrastructure.
Trade between both countries has grown steadily, reaching £8.1bn in 2025 — about $11bn — representing an 11.4 percent year-on-year increase. Analysts say the upward trend underscores Nigeria’s importance as a strategic economic partner for the UK in Africa.
Nigeria remains Africa’s most populous nation, with an estimated 230 million people, and one of its largest economies.
Media scrutiny shadows visit
The visit has also attracted media attention in the United Kingdom, adding a layer of complexity to an otherwise forward-looking diplomatic mission.
An Africa Briefing report highlighted how claims circulating in sections of the British press could influence perceptions around the visit and shape its broader narrative.
Nigerian officials have not publicly addressed the reports, and it remains unclear whether the issue will feature in formal discussions between both governments.
Colonial legacy and reparations debate
Beyond immediate diplomacy, the visit comes amid renewed calls across Africa for reparations tied to slavery and colonial-era abuses. The African Union has described such acts as ‘crimes against humanity’, intensifying pressure on former colonial powers, as explored in an Africa Briefing report on Africa–Caribbean backing for a UN reparations resolution.
In Nigeria, a recent court ruling ordered the UK to pay £420m in compensation to families of miners killed in 1949 during protests against colonial authorities. It is not yet clear whether Tinubu will raise the issue during his engagements in London.
The historical dimension adds a sensitive backdrop to the visit, as both countries seek to balance past grievances with present-day cooperation.
Renewed diplomatic momentum
Tinubu has visited the UK multiple times in recent years, including a September 2024 trip where he met King Charles. However, this visit carries greater diplomatic weight due to its formal state-level status.
While no recent state visit by a British monarch to Nigeria has taken place, Queen Elizabeth II visited twice — in 1956 and again in 2003. King Charles himself visited Nigeria several times as Prince of Wales before ascending the throne in 2022.
Strategic outlook
The visit signals Nigeria’s intent to reposition itself globally, leveraging historical ties while pursuing new economic opportunities. For the UK, strengthening relations with Nigeria aligns with its broader Africa strategy focused on trade, investment and geopolitical engagement.
As both countries navigate the dual realities of a shared colonial past and evolving economic interests, Tinubu’s visit could mark a defining moment in reshaping bilateral relations.
