Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has inaugurated governing councils for seven Colleges of Education and announced the allocation of GHS 403 million to complete stalled hostel projects across the country’s 48 public Colleges of Education.

Speaking at the ceremony in Sunyani, Mr. Iddrisu said the investment, secured under the GETFund, is aimed at easing the accommodation crisis facing students. He explained that in 2023, government began the construction of 45 hostels across 46 Colleges of Education, but progress has been uneven. “Nine of the projects are nearing completion, 11 have made steady progress, while 25 have stalled,” he disclosed.

The Minister confirmed that contracts for non-performing projects have been terminated and will be re-awarded to ensure timely delivery. “Government is determined to provide students with the necessary facilities for effective teaching and learning. This investment is part of that commitment,” he said.

Beyond infrastructure, Mr. Iddrisu reminded the new councils of their critical role in the ongoing transition of the Colleges of Education into full university status. He urged them to work closely with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), particularly on governance and key appointments, until Parliament amends the enabling Act of the colleges to reflect their new status.

He also noted that about 20 college principals are due for retirement or completion of service next year, and tasked the councils to collaborate with GTEC to ensure a smooth leadership succession process.

The inauguration brought together representatives from institutions including McCoy College of Education, Bagabaga College, Jahan College, Gambaga College, Tamale College, Atebubu College, EP Training College, and Bimbilla College of Education.

Mr. Iddrisu reaffirmed that the Ministry of Education will continue to support the colleges with the resources and reforms needed to improve governance, infrastructure, and the overall quality of teacher education in Ghana.
