Another Heartbreak For England As Spain Win Euro 2024 Title

Read Time: 2 minutes

The eternal wait for a trophy goes on for England’s Three Lions as the Gareth Southgate’s side were well beaten by Spain who won a record-breaking fourth European Championship in Berlin, Germany.

For the second painful final in a row, it’s not coming home for the  Englishmen who fought valiantly but they were narrowly beaten 2-1 by La Roja who was the better team in Sunday’s Euro 2024 final.

Manchester City star Rodri won the Euro 2024 Player of the Tournament award while Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal also got recognition

Nico Williams, one of Spain’s breakout performers at the tournament, gave La Roja the lead minutes into the second half when he smartly finished in the bottom corner from a perfectly weighted pass from the team’s other emerging star, freshly turned 17-year-old Lamine Yamal.

England equalized midway through the second half through a brilliantly placed left-footed effort from Cole Palmer from outside the box to restore parity at the Olympiastadion in the German capital.

However, just as Gareth Southgate’s side were preparing for extra-time, Mikel Oyarzabal delivered the knockout blow after some lax defending.

With just under five minutes remaining in regulation time, Oyarzabal tapped home an inch-perfect pass from Marc Cucurella to cap off a victory and a terrific tournament for La Roja.

It is Spain’s fourth Euro title – having previously won in 1964, 2008, and 2012 – while for England, it is heartbreak for a second straight European Championship having been beaten by Italy on penalties at Euro 2020.

England’s long wait for a major tournament victory continues, possibly entering a new phase of enduring a mix of honorable defeats and near victories. Gareth Southgate’s eight-year tenure as manager may be on the brink of uncertainty.

The final was outstanding, featuring an intense match against the tournament’s top team. Spain has been the dominant force in football for the past 25 years, influencing global coaching styles including the possession-based play popularized by managers like Guardiola in the Premier League.
