My new essay: The Nobel Prize and the Justice Congo Never Received

In 2010, I stood outside the United Nations in the rain alongside hundreds of Congolese and allies, demanding the release of a report that powerful interests wanted suppressed.

Sixteen years later, Navi Pillay, whose courage helped bring that report to light, has won the Nobel Peace Prize. I celebrate her recognition. But I cannot ignore how Congo has been largely erased from the international coverage of her remarkable career.

I have met survivors of the atrocities documented in that report. Their stories have stayed with me. Their struggle for justice continues.

In this week’s essay, I reflect on Pillay’s legacy, the politics of international justice, and a question we must confront: What happens when the world knows what was done to our people, yet those responsible remain beyond the reach of justice?
