The ancient and historic town of Atebubu was thrown into a state of electrifying euphoria and resplendent cultural magnificence as the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, joined the revered Nananom and the gallant people of Bonoman to commemorate the 2026 edition of the monumental Meko Bono Festival.
The Vice President was accompanied by a constellation of high-profile government functionaries including the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie; the Bono East Regional Minister, Hon. Francis Owusu Antwi; the Member of Parliament for Atebubu, Hon. Sanja Nanja, and a host of other distinguished government officials.
In her powerfully evocative address, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang underscored the sacrosanct and monumental place of Bonoman in the annals of Ghana’s history, stressing that the preservation of such heritage must be intrinsically linked to the creation of sustainable opportunities for the citizenry.
“Bonoman occupies an indispensable and monumental place in the historical tapestry of Ghana. As we preserve this priceless heritage, we must simultaneously harness its immense potential to create boundless opportunities for our people,” she declared.
She emphasized that culturally prestigious festivals such as Meko Bono must be elevated and treated as formidable platforms for tourism promotion, investment attraction, enterprise development, and accelerated local economic transformation.
“This year’s magnificent celebration is a poignant reminder of our collective duty to continue preserving our history, our indigenous languages, our sacred traditional institutions, our cultural sites, and the timeless wisdom bequeathed to us by our forebears,” the Vice President articulated.
She reaffirmed Government’s unwavering and unflinching commitment to working in seamless collaboration with traditional authorities to advance agriculture, infrastructure, environmental protection, prudent land use, and holistic community development.
In his remarks, the Atebubu lawmaker and other dignitaries highlighted the gargantuan opportunities that abound for Atebubu under the government’s flagship 24-Hour Economy, Accelerated Export Development and Feed Ghana programmes, particularly in the domains of agro-processing, transport, logistics and agricultural value addition, as well as the ongoing massive road infrastructural investments under the Big Push agenda to improve connectivity between farming communities and market centres.
The Vice President also lavished unqualified commendation on the Meko Bono Festival for its inimitable role in strengthening the bonds of unity and fraternity among the people of Bonoman over the past five years, and passionately encouraged all stakeholders to translate the relationships, ideas and investments it attracts into enduring and lasting development opportunities.
She concluded with a fervent prayer: “May Meko Bono continue to preserve the rich and illustrious heritage of Bonoman while creating new, exciting and transformative possibilities for generations yet unborn.”
