DayofPal—South Africa has confirmed that any ceasefire in the Gaza Strip will not affect its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), stressing that accountability for crimes against civilians must continue.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation said the legal case is aimed at preventing future violations rather than merely suspending attacks. It added that a truce does not negate actions already committed during the war.
The ministry said the proceedings reflect South Africa’s long-standing stance against apartheid and its support for oppressed peoples, reiterating that justice cannot be tied to political developments or temporary ceasefires.
South Africa emphasized that international law requires accountability for serious violations regardless of negotiations or pauses in fighting.
The case was filed at the ICJ in December 2023, with South Africa accusing Israel of committing acts amounting to genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
In response, the court ordered provisional measures requiring Israel to protect civilians and allow the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid.
