Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has condemned the violent disturbances that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, describing them as a threat to Ghana’s democratic progress.
In a statement shared on her official Facebook page, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the need for political maturity and calm during elections, cautioning that passion must not be allowed to spiral into chaos.
“While it is good to be interested in the direction our country is taking, we should not allow our passion to devolve into violence. Human life is precious,” she stated.
She called on political actors and the general public to collectively work towards a culture where elections are conducted peacefully and without incident.
“Let us get to a place where elections are, by default, orderly and even ordinary events,” she urged.
Despite the tensions that erupted during parts of the rerun, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang took a moment to congratulate the National Democratic Congress’s candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, on her victory. She praised her for staying resolute throughout the process and described the win as “decisive.”
The Vice President concluded her remarks with a message of goodwill, wishing Ghanaians a peaceful weekend and invoking divine blessings for the country.
