STATEMENT ON THE 56TH ANNIVERSATRY OF THE OVERTHROW OF THE NKRUMAH GOVERNMENT

Read Time: 2 minutes

Once again the Kpando Collective of the Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG) unreservedly condemns the February 24, 1966 coup as a betrayal of the African revolution which has had dire consequences for the unification and the development of the entire continent of Africa.
Undoubtedly, the coup against the popularly elected government of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah was planned by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States of America and executed by counter revolutionary forces in the Police and armed forces including colonel E.K. Kotoka, Major A.A Afrifa, Lt. General J.A. Ankrah and the Inspector – General of Police, J.W.K. Harley.
Under the pretext of fighting communism, the traitors blatantly violated the rights of the people of Ghana. They detained without charge or trial thousands of Ghanaians whose only crime was that they worked with Nkrumah. Hundreds of public and civil servants were arbitrary dismissed and cadres of National Liberation Movements from all over Africa were deported from the country.
The worse crime against the people, was that the coup leaders abandoned Nkrumah’s policy of making Ghana a self-reliant nation which was to champion the political, economic and social unification of the African continent. They embraced the neo-liberal path to destruction under the marching orders of the world Bank and the International Monetary Fund. This entailed the massive devaluation of the national currency, the privatization of state enterprises and the commercialization of social services such as housing, health and education.
56 years after the coup, Ghana has now been reduced to a beggar nation, whose leaders are trotting around the capitalist world begging for alms. Ghana is no longer the proud nation which led the national liberation struggle in Africa and served as an example of a truly free Republican state.
The Ghanaian national economy is now completely shattered with rising unemployment, inflation and general despondency. Ghana’s national debt has ballooned to more than 300 billion dollars. A situation in which total national revenue is not enough to pay the country’s debt service obligations and debt repayment commitments.
The Kpando Collective of the SMG firmly believes that the working people of Africa will be victorious in their struggles against the decedent forces of neo-colonialism and all forms of capitalism.
Onwards to the victory of the forces of socialism.
