SOLIDARITY WITH THE SOCIALIST PARTY OF ZAMBIA TOWARDS THE 12 AUGUST GENERAL ELECTIONS

Read Time: 2 minutes

Read full statement below:

On 12 August 2021, the great people of Zambia, who under the leadership of the late
Kenneth Kaunda provided, at great sacrifice a bastion of resistance against white minority
rule in Southern Africa go to the polls. The Zambian election, as all the elections we see year
after year was no doubt intended as the seasonal ritual of reanointing of neo-colonial rule in
an African country. However, this periodic act of political theatre has been decisively
disrupted by the active participation of the Socialist Party of Zambia (“SPZ”).

The Socialist Movement of Ghana salutes the Socialist Party of Zambia on its electoral
challenge to neo-colonialism – a transformational moment in Zambian electoral politics and a
great step forward for the Zambian people – even if the benefits are not immediately obvious
to all.

SPZ’s election bid has given democratic and political meaning to the Zambian elections.
SPZ is turning the tables on Zambian neo-colonialism and depriving it of one of its most
potent ideological weapons – the appearance of popular support or at least the absence of
alternatives. SPZ participation has forced the real issues of Zambian exploitation and
oppression on to the electoral agenda and presented the real concrete options for
democratically controlled, planned development. SPZ has challenged Zambians to reject
imperialism and take their destiny into their own hands.

SMG also congratulates SPZ on the honesty, inclusiveness, and unwavering focus on the
interests of the Zambian masses that has characterized its campaign. We commend SPZ
resilience in the face of state media suppression, voter intimidation, and candidate harassment
and assault. The State has showed how desperate it is to protect the neo-colonial status quo
upheld by the establishment. Despite this abuse SPZ has acquired genuine mass support. We
call on the mass of the Zambia people to reciprocate SPZ’s militant spirit and faith in the
masses. We call on Zambians to stand up for themselves against those who would seek to
expropriate your power and vote for SPZ; for freedom; and for socialism.
Long live the Socialist Party of Zambia!
Long live Zambia!!
Long live Socialism!!!
