PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE GOASO COLLECTIVE OF THE SOCIALIST MOVEMENT OF GHANA ON THE FOUNDER’S DAY.

Read Time: 2 minutes

To draw the attention of Ghanaians to the celebration of 21st September as Founder’s Day, the
Goaso Collective of SMG brings to your attention the pertinent contribution Osagyefo Dr.
Kwame Nkrumah made for Gold Coast to gain independence and his commitment to founding
the present-day Ghana. We as well oppose the deliberate agenda by some self-seekers to deprave
the history of Ghana.

Born on September 1909 in Nkroful in the then Gold Coast, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the
Osagyefo, was a Ghanaian national and a Socialist who led the Gold Coast to struggle for
independence from the British and presided over it as the new nation of Ghana. He headed
the country from independence in 1957 until he was overthrown by a coup in 1966.
Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was a prominent Pan-African organizer whose radical vision
and bold leadership served as an inspiration to many including Martin Luther King, who often
looked to Nkrumah’s leadership as an example of nonviolent activism. Today, The Positive
Action campaign which was launched to fight imperialism through nonviolence and education by
Osagyefo is the right way to go in this era of class exploitation and profligacy on the part of the
ruling class.

Obviously, posterity has been the Judge of Osagyefo. We find it very strange, the behavior of
these very people who betrayed Nkrumah in his quest for independence when he saw an urgent
need for it that they are now struggling to rewrite the history of our independence, touting
themselves as the architects of our independence and founders of Ghana as well.
Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s developmental agenda is still evidenced in the numerous projects and
programs he undertook during his tenure. His contribution to education, health, Road, and
industry are there for us to see. Sad enough, the best those that orchestrated his overthrow could
do was to privatize these factories by selling them and leaving others to rot.

It is clear that we must find an African solution to our problems, and that this can only be found
in African unity. Divided we are weak; a united Africa would become one of the greatest forces
for the betterment of the world. This vision of Nkrumah is still what Africans need. No wonder a
philosopher said Nkrumah lived hundred years ahead of his generation.

The Goaso collective would like to reiterate that Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is the Founder
of Ghana and opposes all deliberate attempts to rewrite history, we further demand that 21st
September should be celebrated as the Founder’s Day and Nkrumah honored as such.
We wish all Ghanaians a fruitful Founder’s Day celebration.
