Morocco has illegally occupied Western Sahara for 45 years. In 1975, Morocco and Mauritania invaded, expelling the indigenous Saharawi people from their homes. The Saharawi people in the occupied territory and in exile have been calling for recognition of their right to self-determination for decades since. To this day, Morocco maintains a brutally repressive occupation, denying the rights of Saharawi people and plundering their resources.
Former US President Donald Trump attempted to legitimise Morocco’s repressive regime, recognising its illegal claim to Western Sahara in absolute contravention of international law. This is part of the US-brokered pact to normalise relations between Morocco and Israel, and to bolster two illegal occupations.
The international community is complicit, including the UK, by trading in arms with Morocco and allowing UK-based corporations to profit from the plunder.
The Saharawi people continue to fight against the occupation and the ongoing plunder of their land. We must stand with them.
