Sports Ministry to introduce e-sports in Ghana

The executives of E-sports Federation have held talks with the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, to discuss the introduction, promotion and development of the sport in Ghana and abroad.

The sector Minister, who hosted the delegation in his office on Friday, February 28, 2025, expressed his outfit’s readiness to work with every sporting discipline across the country noting that the Ministry has no discrimination against any sport.

According to him, the world is moving towards electronic participation in sports and Ghana cannot afford to be left behind, hence, stressed his commitment to ensure the growth and sustenance of the sport.

However, Mr. Adams advised the executives to guard against any form of cyber-attacks that could destroy the sport, adding that they must do everything possible to protect it and pledged to work with them to make the sport a household name in Ghana and beyond.

He further underscored the need for the federation to position itself to receive the benefits of the opportunities available in the sports ecosystem, adding that, research has proven that there is over $1 trillion available for the development of sports and has a firm belief that the federation has the capacity and ability to benefit from it.

The Minister said the Sports and Recreation Ministry is in the process of reviewing the Sports Act and would solicit the ideas, views and contributions of e-sports and other stakeholders to finalise the bill.

Meanwhile, the President of the E-sports Federation, Mr. Igor Boumekpo, used the opportunity to congratulate Hon. Kofi Adams on his appointment as the Sports Minister and introduce members of the executives to him.

He noted, that the E-sports Federation was officially recognised by the National Sports Authority (NSA) in 2024, and has so far organised a number of tournaments and competitions at both the national and international levels to help develop the sport.

He affirmed his commitment for the development of the sport and assured the Minister of his support and collaboration to realise its growth.

Mr. Igor Boumekpo concluded by appealing for the support of the Minister for the establishment of regional e-sports centres across all the 16 regions to help with the diversification and growth of the sport in Ghana.
