The Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG) unequivocally condemns the escalating acts of aggression,
military intimidation, and open interference by the United States of America against the Bolivarian
Republic of Venezuela. The recent hijacking of vessels, the bombardment of Venezuelan territory
including direct military attacks on the states of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira and the kidnapping of
President Nicolás Maduro and his wife represent a dangerous and criminal escalation in the long-standing
imperialist war against the Venezuelan people and their revolutionary project.
These military assaults, which have endangered civilian lives and destroyed critical infrastructure,
constitute acts of war against a sovereign nation. They further expose the willingness of U.S. imperialism
to use brute force to impose its will, destabilise elected governments, and terrorise populations that resist
domination. These actions are not isolated incidents, but part of a well-documented and carefully
orchestrated imperialist strategy aimed at overthrowing the Bolivarian Revolution, dismantling
Venezuela’s sovereignty, and seizing control of the country’s vast oil and natural resources for the benefit
of U.S. capital and its multinational corporations.
This imperialist intent has now been made explicit at the highest political level. In a recent press
conference, U.S. President Donald Trump arrogantly declared that the United States is going to “run
Venezuela,” a statement that amounts to an open confession of plans for foreign domination, occupation,
and regime imposition. Such remarks strip away the hypocrisy of U.S. rhetoric and confirm that the
aggression against Venezuela is not about democracy or human rights, but about imperial control,
economic plunder, and geopolitical domination.
Under the false banners of “democracy,” “human rights,” and “security,” U.S. imperialism continues to
wage economic warfare, impose illegal sanctions, sponsor internal destabilisation, and now openly deploy
military force against a sovereign nation that has dared to chart an independent path in defence of its
people and its resources.
The SMG views the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife as an act of international banditry and a gross violation of international law. It is an attack not only on the Venezuelan state, but on
the collective right of our peoples to self-determination, political independence, and control over their
own resources. This assault on Venezuela is therefore an assault on all progressive, anti-imperialist
struggles across Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Caribbean.
The Bolivarian Revolution has, for decades, stood as a beacon of hope for oppressed peoples worldwide.
It has demonstrated that it is possible to prioritise social needs over corporate profit, to redistribute wealth in favour of the working class and the poor, and to resist imperial domination through popular organisation and political consciousness. It is precisely these achievements that imperialism seeks to destroy through sanctions, sabotage, military aggression, and regime-change operations.
As Africans, we cannot remain silent. Our history of colonialism, neo-colonial exploitation, military
intervention, and resource plunder binds our struggle inseparably to that of the Venezuelan people. The
same forces that bomb Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira today are the forces that have within the last few
weeks launched military strikes on Nigeria with the intent of igniting religious tensions, impose IMF
austerity, loot African resources, militarise our states, and repress popular movements across Africa.
The Socialist Movement of Ghana therefore calls on all progressive forces, workers’ organisations, youth
movements, women’s movements, revolutionary parties, and popular organisations to rise in defence of
Venezuela and the Bolivarian Revolution. We call not only for international solidarity but for immediate
tangible actions at the national level in each of our countries.
In particular, we urgently call on all organisations within the Pan-Africanism Today (PAT) project, the
West African Peoples Organization (WAPO), and the International Peoples Assembly (IPA) to
immediately mobilise coordinated political action, public statements, demonstrations, and international
solidarity campaigns to:
Signed.
