SMG Statement on the Current Conflict in Sudan

Read Time: 2 minutes

The Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG) stands in solidarity with the people of Sudan and their popular organisations, including the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP), in the struggle for peace and development. SMG condemns the genocidal conflict between factions of the militarised elite that has terrorised the People of Sudan, especially since 2023. SMG also condemns the murky transnational corporate and re-source-grabbing agenda of the United States and the West and some Arab and East African countries at play in Sudan’s conflict.

It was a popular and peaceful struggle that laid the ground for the exit of Omar al-Bashir’s dictatorship after 30-years in power. At the peak of the revolution, the economic interests that had backed mainly the Bashir regime, faced with his inevitable defeat, reorganised around a faction of the Sudanese military to depose Bashir and forestall the establishment of a popular power. Thus, despite announcements of a structured transition to civilian government, the military leaders almost immediately began to suppress demo-factions around various strongmen representing different elite economic and geopolitical interest groups. It is this process that culminated in the bloody war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, both of whom are armed and financed by external interest groups, and neither of which, at this point, can be said to represent the interests of the People of Sudan.

Daily, the people of Sudan endure indiscriminate bombardment, forced displacement, death, destruction of vital infrastructure, and the collapse of health, education, and other social systems in what has been described as the currently most violent conflict in the world. Despite this abuse, the popular forces remain focused. They continue to demonstrate political clarity and tremendous resilience.

They continue to speak out and mobilise. The People of Sudan clearly reject both warring factions and any national “solution” based on military force or elite interests. They reject the moves by various Western power players (and their Regional sidekicks) to broker unity between the factions as a means to consolidate and “legitimise” their dominance and exploitation of the Sudanese people. The spirit of the December Revolution lives on with a commitment to dismantle dictatorship and build a democratic, just, and sovereign nation entirely in charge of its resources and labour power.

The Sudanese Communist Party, in particular articulates the progressive position clearly. SCP rejects any notion that the SAF and RSF are legitimate political actors. Both are responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Both are unfit to play any role in Sudan’s future. SCP rejects both the Jeddah and Manama processes as an ongoing betrayal of Sudan. SCP insists that Sudan’s future must be determined by its people, free from military coercion or Western interests in its strategic resources and geopolitical assets.
The SMG stands with progressive forces worldwide in condemning the massacres, systematic violence, and war crimes perpetrated by both warring parties and the agenda to perpetuate their rule based on some sort of endorsement by the self-styled “international community”.

SMG supports the creation of a broad civil front composed of trade unions, women’s and youth movements, and anti-imperialist organisations as a vehicle for collective resistance and the defeat of violent elite politics in favour of popular government.

SMG urges progressive movements across Africa to extend active solidarity to this effort through political advocacy and international mobilisation. Sudan’s struggle is Africa’s struggle.

Let us stand for unity, sovereignty, and development.

End the war now!

No negotiations with warlords!
Power to the Sudanese people!

Signed

Kwesi Pratt Jnr.

General Secretary
