SMG Statement on the 68th Anniversary of Ghana’s Independence

On this historic day, March 6, 2025, the Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG) joins the people of
Ghana in commemorating the 68th anniversary of our nation’s independence. Today, we remember
the heroic struggles led by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the countless Gold Coast patriots
who, with unwavering determination and overwhelming support, liberated our nation from the
shackles of British colonial rule. Their sacrifices and vision for a free, united, and prosperous Ghana
remain the foundation upon which we continue to build our nation.
The independence of Ghana in 1957 was not merely a political victory, it was a clarion call for the
total liberation of Africa and the realization of a Pan-African vision. Under Nkrumah’s leadership,
Ghana embarked on an ambitious path of state-led industrialization, economic self-reliance, and
social transformation.

The construction of the Akosombo Dam, the establishment of over 400 state enterprises, and the
promotion of education and healthcare were all testament to Nkrumah’s belief in socialism as the
means to uplift our people and secure our sovereignty.
Today, as we celebrate this milestone, we are reminded that the struggle for true independence
and economic emancipation is far from over. The overwhelming goodwill expressed by Ghanaians
at the polls is a clear call for bold, progressive leadership that prioritizes the needs of the masses
over the interests of a privileged few.

While the NDC is a social democratic party and not explicitly socialist, its victory reflects the desire
of Ghanaians for a government that prioritizes their welfare and addresses the systemic challenges
facing our nation. We urge the Mahama-led administration to seize this moment to realign the
country’s policies and programs with the aspirations of the masses and to take bold steps toward
a more equitable and self-reliant Ghana.

The SMG urges the Mahama-led government to draw inspiration from the successes of nations that
have embraced state-led industrialization and socialist policies. China, for instance, achieved its
independence in 1949, eight years ahead of ours and, despite starting as a backward peasant
economy, has transformed itself into a global superpower through a commitment to socialist
principles, state planning, and industrialization. By prioritizing the development of its productive
forces, investing in infrastructure, and ensuring that the state plays a central role in economic
planning, China has lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty and built a modern, resilient
economy. Ghana can and must follow a similar path.
We call on the government to prioritize the following:

1. State-Led Industrialization: Revive and expand state-owned enterprises to drive
   industrialization, create jobs, and reduce our dependence on imports. The state must take the lead
   in strategic sectors such as energy, agriculture, manufacturing, and technology. This requires a
   clear and practical strategy that goes beyond rhetoric. Any move toward reorganization of society
   with state-led industrialization must be accompanied by clear communication, inclusive decision

making, and measures to cushion the negative impact on vulnerable populations during the
transition We, therefore, call on the government to not just rescind its decision to privatize the
Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) but rather open up for a broader consultative process on
“privatization and state-led industrialization” with the public and organized labour at the center.

2. Economic Self-Reliance: Reduce Ghana’s reliance on foreign aid and loans by mobilizing
   domestic resources, strengthening local industries, and promoting value addition to our natural
   resources.
3. Social Justice and Equity: Implement policies that ensure equitable distribution of wealth,
   access to quality education, healthcare, and housing for all Ghanaians. The gap between the rich
   and the poor must be narrowed through social interventions and programs.
4. Pan-African Solidarity: Reaffirm Ghana’s commitment to the Pan-African project
   championed by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah by fostering closer ties with other African nations,
   promoting regional integration, and supporting the struggle for economic and political liberation
   across the continent. The Akufo-Addo government’s last-minute suspension of diplomatic
   relationship with the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic is unacceptable and must not be allowed
   to stand. We must be seen to clearly support the struggles of countries who are suffering the brute
   of imperialism like Cuba, Venezuela, and Palestine.
   The vision of Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah was not just for an independent Ghana but for a Ghana
   that would contribute meaningfully to the political and economic emancipation of Africa and the
   global south. As we mark 68 years of independence, let us recommit ourselves to this vision. Let us
   work together to build a Ghana that is truly free, prosperous, and socialist.
