SMG STATEMENT ON IRAN-ISREAL CONFRONTATION

Read Time: 2 minutes

The Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG) calls for immediate, and serious efforts to facilitate the de-escalation of the tensions between Iran and Israel and in the broader West Asia region.

We make this call following Iran’s drone and missile attack on Israel in retaliation for the Zionist State’s unjustified air strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria which killed several people including a general of the Revolutionary Guards. The Israeli action which was in breach of international law and the Geneva Convention was clearly designed to divert global attention from its genocidal aggression in Gaza and to draw the United States of America and other Western allies deeper into its hysterical aggression west in Asia.

The SMG notes that Iran’s response to the deliberate Israeli provocations was carefully measured in order to prevent a disproportionate outcome and to signal that impunity has dangerous repercussions for world peace and insecurity and ought not to be tolerated.

The hypocrisy of the United States of America and its allies in the condemnation of the Iranian response is remarkable. These countries blatantly refused to condemn the Israeli aggression which was in clear violation of international law, however, they found lame reasons for mobilizing their intelligence and armed forces in support of Israel.

The SMG views the continued military collaboration of the Western countries and Israel as repugnant in the extreme in the view of the on-going genocide in Gaza.
The slaughter of tens of thousands of Palestinians, mostly women and children must be sufficient grounds for denying Israel access to sophisticated weapons for the entrenchment of its hegemonic colonial apartheid reign of terror in the Middle East.

The call for de-escalation must necessarily factor in the imperative of the liberation of Palestine from the yoke of apartheid colonialism, an end to terrorist aggression against the Iranian state and people including the assassination of scientists and the dismantling of foreign military presence in the region.
We have a duty to the peaceful resolution of international conflicts but this can only be secured in a world free from the exploitation and domination of the hegemonic powers.

Signed.
Kwesi Pratt, Jnr.
