Read Time: < 1 minute

The Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG) wishes to express our deepest condolences to the
Nigerian Labour Congress on the recent passing of Ali Ciroma. Ciroma served as the Secretary
General of the organization from 1984 to 1988.

We would like to take a moment to express our admiration for Comrade Ciroma’s tireless and
selfless contributions to the labour movement in Nigeria. He was a remarkable individual who
fearlessly worked to ensure that workers’ rights were always protected, and their voices heard.
During his tenure as NLC president, Ciroma was a vocal opponent of President Ibrahim Badamasi
Babangida’s decision to remove fuel subsidy and implement structural adjustment program (SAP).
He used various methods such as workers’ education, shop floor mobilization, popular rallies,
protests, media campaigns, and strikes to pressure state officials in his opposition to the neoliberal
policies.

Ali Ciroma was a champion for the underprivileged and advocated for an African-based
development agenda. His remarkable leadership skills and dedication to the cause of workers’
rights have left a lasting impact on the labour movement in Nigeria. His unwavering commitment to
social justice has been a source of inspiration for many.

The SMG stands in solidarity with the Nigerian Labour Congress during this difficult time, and we
hope that they find comfort in the knowledge that Ali Ciroma’s legacy will continue to inspire
generations to come. Our thoughts are with the NLC, as well as the family and friends of Ali Ciroma.
In solidarity
Kwesi Pratt Jnr
