Resident of Bontibor cry over death trap bridge and bad road

Read Time: 3 minutes

Bontibor is a farming community in the Oti Region under Nkwanta South municipality, the residents produce Cocoa, Yam, Cassava, maize, plantain and other food staff to support the country.

Since agriculture is the backbone of every developing country, the chief and elders of the Bontibor community encourage the young in the area to develop interest in agriculture.

The bridge, constructed last year, suffered significant damage following heavy rains, leaving residents cut off from essential services and hindering transportation. The Bontibor Bridge serves as a crucial link for surrounding communities, facilitating the movement of good.

A contract which was awarded in 2016, the bridge has not seen major improvements, and its collapse has disrupted daily life while raising concerns over the safety and accessibility of the alternative routes.

Margaret Mensah, a midwife, who works at Bontibor narrates how challenging the health facility goes through in sending a client to a bigger hospital for further treatment.

Speaking to Samali Abdul Razak a broadcast journalist, the Midwife told the government to see these as a matter of urgency and help the people of Bontibor and others surrounding communities.

Frank Yeboah, Assembly man of the community stated in an interview that, the Bontibor community is a farming community where they produce a lot of cocoa, cassava, plantain, maiz and other crops. He said it is sad to see how all this food stuff is spoiling in the community because they have been cut off.

According to Frank Yeboah the contractor needs very bad work which has caused a lot of harm to the community.

He stated that, school is about to resume and his heart is bleeding because he does not know how these students are going to apply the road.

Frank Yeboah added that, the health facility in the community is struggling to handle the community members because some of the cases need to be referred to bigger hospitals for further treatment but with the nature of the road people lose their lives.

Mr. P.K Quasion who is the Eldest leader of the Bontibor community stated that, SHS students lost his life due to the nature of the bridge.

Mr. Quasion shed tears while speaking, according to him the road is their only means to the municipal capital and now that they have been cut off they do not know what to do.

He is calling on the ministry of roads, led by Hon. Kwame Agbodza to come and rescue them.

Eric Modorm a teacher, added that, the bridge which was constructed by the contractor is a waste of resources.

According to him the bridge is not up to a year and there are cracks all over it. He stated that marketers have to carry their goods on their head before using the bridge because cars cannot use the bridge.

The residents of Bontibor then call on the President, John Dramani Mahama to hear their cries since he said Bontibor is a town that he will never forget.
