The Socialist Movement of Ghana will observe “Ghana’s Day of Shame” (24th February), this year with
the launch of the fourth edition of “The Great Deception – How the CIA Overthrew Nkrumah”.
The book is a collection of declassified secret US government documents (White House, CIA, and
National Security Council) describing the collaboration of the US and Western Europe in the 1966
Ghana coup. It also contains commentary by political actors, journalists, and historians made at the time
these records were declassified.
The event will take place on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at the Headquarters of the Socialist
Movement of Ghana (SMG) on the George Walker Bush Highway, North Dzorwulu, Accra.
Comrade Yao Graham will chair the event. Dr. Graham is the Coordinator of Third World Network
Africa and an important and well known voice in the struggle to transcend Africa’s neo-colonial
intellectual and institutional legacy.
Comrade Vijay Prashad will launch the book. Professor Prashad is global citizen of Indian origin and
one of the foremost public intellectuals of this century. He is a prolific journalist and much sought-after
socio-political commentator. He is currently the Executive Director of Tricontinental Institute for Social
Research, Chief Editor of Leftword Books. Chief correspondent for Globetrotter Publications and a
leading figure in the International Peoples Assembly.
Vijay has been an important voice on the issues of political and economic liberation and dignity for the
Global South including the struggle for Pan-Africanism which the CIA sought to dismantle by
overthrowing Nkrumah in 1966.
Prof Prashad is also a distinguished historian. He was the George and Martha Kellner Chair in South
Asian History and a Professor of International Studies at Trinity College Hartford, Connecticut, United
States of America from 1996 to 2017. From 2013 to 2014, he was the Edward Said chair at the
American University of Beirut and has also been a Senior Fellow of the Issam Fares Institute of Public
Policy.
Comrade Akua Britwum, a Professor at the University of Cape Coast, and a leading member of the SMG
has also been invited to do the review of the book.
Organisers say that the event is planned to expose the US role in undermining and eventually
overthrowing Ghana’s First Republic as part of a larger campaign to halt the trend towards African
Unification. Organisers hope to relate this history to current struggles in Africa generally and our
subregion.
Invited guests include Political Party leaders, Trade Union leaders, progressive activists, State
functionaries, the Diplomatic Community, mass organisations and the public.

Highly descriptive article, I enjoyed that bit. Will there be a part 2?
