Mr. Kwesi Pratt, Jnr, a member of the Coordinating Committee of the Pan African Progressive Front (PPF) has called for the unity of all African peoples in the struggle for reparations for crimes committed by capitalist states of the West.
He said “Reparation is not about the payment of compensation for the atrocities committed against us because no amount of money can pay for centuries of dehumanization and enslavement.
“It is about resetting the world and building a new world in which the African people and indeed all citizens of the globe can live as free men and women, taking their destinies into their own hands”.
Mr. Pratt who doubles as General Secretary of the Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG) was speaking at the 13th High Level Dialogue on Human Rights, Democracy and Governance: Trends, Challenges, And Prospects organized by the African Union in Accra today.
He said the current predicament of the African people has its roots in slavery, classical colonialism and today’s neo-colonialism.
“We have to defeat these reactionary forces which have worked against our interests for centuries and build a new Africa free from all forms of oppression and exploitation.
He said Kwame Nkrumah, Sekou Toure, Amilcar Cabral and Patrice Lumumba remain the leaders of the African liberation struggle and today’s leaders on the continent need to free themselves from the imposition of the West.
Mr. Pratt took advantage of the platform to introduce his new book titled, “Reparations: History, Struggle, Politics and Law” to the audience of former Heads of State and Governments and leaders of the African Union.
President John Dramani Mahama, the current AU Champion for Reparations and Head of State of Ghana wrote the foreword to the book.
He wrote “To read this book is to join a global movement for historical justice, epistemic liberation and political renewal”.
Publishers of the book say that they have already received 30, 000 requests for it ahead of the official launching by President Mahama on September 9, 2025.
