The Domestic Violence & Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Airport Divisional Police has arrested two nannies for allegedly administering sleep-inducing drugs to their employer’s two-year-old twin boys in East Legon, Accra.
The suspects are; Francisca Boakye – a 30-year-old student nurse from Konongo in the Ashanti Region, and Harriet Ansah (31-year-old) from Jasikan in the Oti Region).
Addressing the media, Head of Public Affairs Unit, Superintendent Julian Obeng, says a 40-year-old businesswoman who is mother of the twin boys noticed an unusual drowsiness and behavioral changes in her children and reported the case to the East Legon police station in September 2025.
According to the police, the nannies allegedly mixed an unknown sleep‐inducing substance (suspected to be “Dynewell”) into the children’s milk without the mother’s knowledge.
In addition to the drugging allegations, one of the nannies reportedly admitted to other abusive acts: burning the children’s hands, calling them derogatory names (e.g. “chimpanzee”), and inflicting emotional abuse.
During a search of their quarters, police found two used and four unused sachets of the suspected substance admitted to the children. These have been seized for forensic analysis.
Both suspects are currently in police custody, cautioned, formally charged, and remanded. Their next court appearance is set for October 20, 2025.
The Accra Regional Police Command has condemned the alleged acts, calling them “deplorable and unacceptable,” and have urged parents/guardians to be cautious in supervising domestic staff entrusted with care of children.
