Netherlands was a leading power at the time of Mercantile capitalism some 400 years ago. It is a country with little natural resources or minerals. It is tiny in geographic size. It set up the first share holding company in human history when wealthy Dutch traders combined to form the Dutch East India Company to become the gateway for trade goods from Asia and Africa into Europe… It effectively cut out India as the Middleman to Asian trade and then it colonized the sources of spices in Malaysia and a Indonesia. The success of the DEIC lay in cheap prison labour availed by the Dutch Government, and permission to rob and sink the ships of competing powers and, of course slavery and the slave trade. Many of the leaders of the anticolonial struggles in the Far East were captured and brought to the Cape as slaves, the source of Islam in South Africa.
