More than 70 international Jewish, pro-Palestinian, trade union, political, cultural and academic organizations and individuals have sent yesterday an open letter to the Basel government concerning the 125th anniversary celebrations of the Zionist Congress in Basel.

It is clear to us that there is no reason to celebrate. Zionism is the ideological basis of the state of Israel, one of the last colonial settlement projects of the 21st century. Israel was founded in the course of a concerted ethnic cleansing of the majority of the indigenous population, the Palestinians.

Displacement, expulsion and oppression continue to this day.

We know that Zionism was a response to the persecution of Jews in Europe. But it was inspired by the colonialist thinking of the time and created a new injustice that continues to this day.

With this open letter, the undersigned organisations and individuals call on the city of Basel to take responsibility and stand on the right side of history against apartheid and colonization which are immoral and crimes against humanity.

Whether in Basel or in Israel/Palestine, our struggle is against all forms of discriminations, for freedom, justice and equality for all.
