Simon Awini Ayamga, a 33-year-old Emergency Nursing student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), is reportedly missing after he allegedly and boastfully threatened to burn down the Supreme Court in a WhatsApp group chat with friends.

Simon is said to have been picked up by a joint police and intelligence operatives last Wednesday prior to the Supreme Court ruling on Thursday as to whether chairperson of the electoral commission can be made to mount the witness box in the election petition filed by ex-president John Mahama.

Friends of Simon Ayamga say the outspoken lad has since Wednesday not been sighted on campus and little is known about his whereabouts.

The Insight gathered that attempts by his lawyers, upon a tipoff, to get the Ashanti Regional Police Command to assist locate the young man proved futile as they were not ready to volunteer information about his whereabouts.

Simon’s lawyers are said to be working around the clock to locate him and are even preparing to go to court if that will lead to his freedom.

Simon’s phone has since been off and no family member or his lawyers were informed after his arrest.

A report carried out by one of the media houses with affiliation in government said Simon Ayamgaissued the threat in a WhatsApp group called POLITICS AND GOVERNANCE in a chat about the pending Supreme Court ruling on whether Electoral Commission Chair, Jean Mensa should mount the witness box or not.

According to the report a copy of the WhatsApp chat availableindicate that a member of the group posted the message saying that “1. Pre-trial interrogatories – DENIED”; “2. Inspection of witness documents – DENIED,” and that triggered the threat from Simon Ayamga who wrote that they will burn down the Supreme Court if Jean Mensa is not allowed to testify.

His exact words were “Then we will burn down that place call [sic] the Supreme Court…They dare not say Jean Mensah should not enter the witness box.”

The report further said the suspect was therefore picked up by a joint team of Police and Intelligence operatives from Accra, who went in pursuit of him following his treacherous WhatsApp comment.

He was arrested at Caesar Hostel, Ayeduase New Site in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region on the evening of Wednesday February 10, 2021 at about 6pm.
