MINREX summons the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in protest of his disrespectful conduct

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires on Friday, June 30 to call his attention, once again, to the unfriendly conduct he has assumed since his arrival in Cuba, which is not the conduct of a diplomat and is disrespectful of the Cuban people.

The Director of Bilateral Issues of the U.S. General Directorate, Alejandro García del Toro, handed the diplomat a Note Verbale of protest in which he firmly rejects his behavior, which violates the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and contradicts the Agreement on the Reestablishment of Diplomatic Relations signed by both governments.

García del Toro emphasized, as stated in the Note Verbale delivered, that by inciting Cuban citizens to commit criminal acts of marked gravity, to attempt against the constitutional order or to stimulate them to act against the authorities, and to demonstrate in support of the interests and objectives of a hostile foreign power, the diplomat assumes a provocative and irresponsible conduct. He added that the immunity he enjoys as a representative of his country cannot be used as a cover for acts contrary to the sovereignty and internal order of the country to which he is accredited, in this case Cuba.

The Note Verbale of the Ministry also rejected the public and insulting manipulation of the Chargé d’Affaires when referring to the National Hero José Martí, with which the American showed that he does not know that independence and anti-imperialism, as pillars of the Cuban nation, are based on José Martí’s conviction and warning regarding the danger that the desire for domination by the United States represents for Cuba.

The Director took advantage of the meeting to give the diplomat a copy of fragments of José Martí’s unfinished letter to his Mexican friend Manuel Mercado.
