Lands Minister Extends Deadline for Small-Scale Mining License Rectification

Read Time: 2 minutes

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), has granted an extension to small-scale miners for the regularization of their mining licences, with the new deadline set for the end of August 2025.

This decision follows a petition by the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM), requesting additional time to address irregularities identified in the licensing process.

The extension was announced during a meeting between the Minister and the leadership of GNASSM on Wednesday, 30th July 2025. The engagement sought to address concerns arising from a recent audit that flagged 902 small-scale mining licences for various infractions.

Hon. Buah emphasized the importance of resolving these issues promptly while ensuring fairness and transparency. To facilitate the process, the Ministry has established a dedicated help desk with a 3-member committee to assist miners in regularizing their documentation.

“This extension is not punitive but rather an opportunity for collaboration between the Ministry, the Minerals Commission, and Miners to streamline the licensing system,” the Minister stated.

Additionally, Hon. Buah reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the upcoming Cooperative Mining Scheme, assuring that it will be community-driven with stringent safeguards against political or private-sector interference.

He stressed that the new model would prioritize transparency, accountability, and equitable local benefits.

In response, GNASSM National Secretary, Mr. Godwin Armah, commended the Minister’s consultative approach and reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to partnering with Government to foster a sustainable and legally compliant small-scale mining sector.

As mining remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic development, this collaborative effort marks a significant stride toward a more responsible and well-regulated industry
