The Socialist Movement of Ghana – S.M.G is convening its Second National Congress from 19-21 September at the Amilcar Cabral School. Under the powerful theme “Imperialism in Crisis: Pan-African Solidarity and Socialist Transformation,” the Congress has brought together over 300 delegates from 30 collectives across the country.

Addressing the Congress, General Secretary Kwesi Pratt Jnr. highlighted major achievements since the 2021 congress:

Membership has doubled from 2,000 to over 4,000 people.

30 collectives have been established in 15 regions.

The Youth Wing is active in all 30 collectives.

The Women’s Wing successfully led the “Don’t Tax My Period” campaign, which resulted in the removal of taxes on sanitary pads.

The SMG has built strong relationships with all 22 national unions of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), collaborating on key issues like opposing the privatisation of the Electricity Company of Ghana.

The movement has started Pan-African Youth Clubs in senior high schools to introduce young people to true African history and the principles of Pan-Africanism.

For the first time, the SMG released a manifesto for the 2024 national elections, despite not contesting, to create a platform for mass mobilisation and demonstrate a viable alternative to the neoliberal order.

Overall the congress has been a vibrant display of revolutionary culture, featuring poetry, song, and dance. Various ambassadors and embassy representatives together with fraternal organisations have attended the Congress, a testimony to SMG’s commitment to internationalism and solidarity.

Viva SMG! Forward to genuine Pan Africanism!
