“How can our policymakers bring economy to its knees when they claim to have best economists” – IEA Director of Research

Read Time: 2 minutes

The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs, Dr. John Kwakye, has chastised managers of the Ghanaian economy, describing their failure as “shame”.

In a tweet, Dr. John Kwakye, said, he could not understand why the policymakers could bring the economy close to its knees when they claim to have the best economists and financial experts.

“How can our policymakers bring the economy close to its knees when they claim to have the best economists? And do the less-experienced IMF staff, their juniors by many years, know better than them such that they are running to them for policy advice?”

He further added that “how did our economic managers get us to this point where we seem to have completely run out of money to pay contractors, DACF [District Assembly Common Fund], GHETFund, NHIF, Road Fund, Nursing Trainees, Teacher Trainees, NABCO, National Service, Personal School Feeding, and even some salaries? It’s a shame?”

Dr. Kwakye was also unhappy of the continuous size of President Akufo-Addo’s government despite calls for him to cut the numbers significantly.

He described as sad how people are suffering in the country.

“Isn’t a shame and economic injustice that in a country with 85 ministers – each with an SUV, saloon car, driver, security, garden boy, other house help, free fuel, free utilities – 10 SHS students are reported to be sharing a single fish at lunch?”
