Massive protests have taken place in some parts of the country against the 2020 presidential and parliamentary results announced by Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC).

In yesterday’s street protests, thousands of people mainly supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who believe the results were a ‘stolen verdict’ for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo clashed with the police in an attempt to mass up at the headquarters of the electoral commission in Accra.

Wearing red T-shirts along with red armed and head bands and chanting war songs, the thousands of supporters who held placards with inscriptions to show their anger and disapproval of the results were prevented from massing up at the electoral commission.

In an attempt to stop the protesters, the police used water cannons and other crowd control batons to disperse the huge crowd which seemed resistant to the police action.

In the Volta region, supporters of the NDC in the Ketu South constituency also took to the streets yesterday to protest against the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission over what they call a flawed election that led to the declaration of Nana Akufo-Addo as the president-elect.

According to the NDC supporters, the declaration was a stolen verdict orchestrated by the NPP and Chairperson of the EC, Madam Jean Mensa.

The protest in Ketu South comes after the Upper West Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress joined the nationwide resistance protest by party faithful on Tuesday against the Electoral Commission over what they term as flawed election results.

The demonstration in Upper West Region which lasted for three hours saw former appointees, party executives, party members and sympathizers marching through some principal streets of Wa with placards such as “Uphold the people’s will”, “Nana must go” as well as “Mahama must be declared Winner” among others with heavily armed police personnel including the Regional Commander DCOP Aboagye Nyarko who was stationed at the Upper West Regional office of the Electoral Commission with other senior officers of the service.

Delivering a petition to the Regional Director of the Electoral Commission Ali Osman on behalf of NDC, the Wa Central Communications Officer of the NDC Mohammed Tandoh said the Presidential results of the just-ended elections was rejected by the flagbearer John Dramani Mahama and leadership of the party on the basis of flawed results declared by the Chairperson of the EC Jean Mensa.

Women supporters of the NDC in the Ashanti region also hit the streets in protest against the results of the 2020 polls.

According to the women, who converged at the party’s regional headquarters in Kumasi, the electoral commission rigged the polls for President Akufo-Addo and the NPP.

The protest is being led by the party’s national woman organizer Dr Hannah Bissiw and the Ashanti regional woman organizer Mrs Gloria Huza.
