Read Time: 3 minutes The Standing Committee (SC) of the Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG), newly elected at the justended National Congress, held its inaugural meeting on Friday, 17th October 2025. This meeting
marked a pivotal moment to reflect on the Congress resolutions and to chart a clear, collective path
forward in our struggle for Pan-African solidarity and socialist transformation. The Congress was
convened under the theme: “Imperialism in Crisis: Pan-African Solidarity and Socialist
Transformation.”
Guided by the political clarity and unwavering commitment of the delegates, the Standing
Committee deliberated extensively on pressing national and international developments. The
Committee resolved to bring these critical issues to the attention of the Ghanaian public and the
broader working class Movement.
- The National Crisis: Environmental Destruction and Capitalist Plunder
Domestically, the SMG is deeply alarmed by the persistent destruction of Ghana’s environment,
particularly the poisoning of our rivers and forests through ‘illegal’ mining (galamsey). These acts of environmental vandalism continue unabated due to state inaction, collusion, and the insatiable
greed of profit seeking elites. But they are also caused by the structural causes of rural (and
Ghanaian) poverty, the extractive agricultural reliance on cocoa, colonial policies of divide and rule, turning Chiefs against the people and the public interest, and the desperation of young Ghanaians to survive and earn a quick buck, no matter the consequences.
We demand immediate, transparent, and decisive action by the government to halt this
devastation. Ghana’s natural wealth must serve the collective good and not the interests of private profiteers or foreign capital. The plunder of our lands and waters is an assault on future generations.
Galamsey must be tackled at its root causes, returning the land to the public sector, providing youth with meaningful and high-earning work, ensuring each and every Ghanaian a high quality and free higher education, and restructuring the rural sector with an eye towards food sovereignty, environmentally sustainable practices, and cooperative agrarian work. - International Solidarity and Anti-Imperialism
The Socialist Movement of Ghana unequivocally condemns the ongoing imperialist aggression by
the United States and its allies, particularly the renewed threats and destabilization attempts
targeting the sovereignty of Venezuela. The recent posture of Donald Trump reviving coercive
tactics, sanctions, and destabilization plots exemplifies the persistent contempt of imperialist
powers for the self-determination and dignity of independent nations. We stand in firm solidarity
with the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and its people as they resist imperial subjugation.
We also strongly denounce the genocidal war waged by the Israeli regime against the Palestinian
people, a campaign sustained by relentless U.S. military, economic, and diplomatic backing. The
actions of the Israeli occupation forces indiscriminate bombings, ethnic cleansing, and the
destruction of civilian infrastructure constitute clear crimes against humanity.
We rea^irm our unflinching solidarity with Venezuela, Palestine, and all oppressed nations
confronting imperialism, Zionism, and neo-colonial domination.
- Opposition to Neo-liberalism: IMF, World Bank, and the Attack on Working People.
The Socialist Movement of Ghana reiterates its categorical opposition to the domination of our
economy by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. These institutions of global capital continue to impose neoliberal policies that erode public services, undermine labor rights, shrink wages, and transfer wealth from the working class to foreign and local elites.
We reject the logic of austerity, privatization, and dependency. Instead, we commit to building a
sovereign, people-centred economy that prioritizes public ownership, democratic control, and
social justice. - Organizational Expansion and Worker Mobilization.
In order to build power from below, the Standing Committee discussed the urgent task of expanding SMG’s presence and activity across all 16 administrative regions. Our urgent task is to deepen grassroots organizing, develop collectives, and fortify the consciousness and power of the working class.
We rea^irm our commitment to worker-led transformation, and to strengthening our collaboration with the trade unions. Organized labor remains a cornerstone of the anti-capitalist struggle, as envisioned by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The working class must lead the charge toward a new Ghana free from exploitation, dependency, and oppression.
The Socialist Movement of Ghana calls upon all progressive forces, workers, students, youth, and
communities to intensify the struggle against imperialism, Zionism, and capitalist exploitation. The deepening crisis of global imperialism presents a historic opportunity. Together, we must build a new world anchored in solidarity, justice, and socialism.
